I'll have the Scrapple please...

I recently heard of this edible monstrosity, and had to say that id never heard of it before Monday.
SCRAPPLE -Any guesses??? And no googling...
Scrapple, as the name suggests, is the scrap bits of the pig that didnt quite meet the requirements for hotdog (which I always thought were fairly low on the standards scale).
The left over floor scraps of the pig are deliciously pressed together into a brick of meat that looks worse than spam. Apparently it is best served with Ketchup and pancakes.
What I don't understand...is that if its the bits that NO ONE would eat - why would marketing them together as a brick of quasi edible meat, make it any more appealing.....
I dont know, what do you guys think?

Are we encouraging this - that looks oddly enough like dog food - becuase it utilizes all parts of the pig (there was also a chicken and beef scrapple i believe) - or do we think that the scrap bits of the animal, are best left to be consumed by the garbage?

When I was young, I was taught in schools that races from Europe were destructive to animals by killing them and not using every part. In the same breath, I was taught that the indigineous peoples of North America were respectful to animals and would use every part of the animal after slaying it.
So... according to the education I received as a youngster, this is appropriate and respectful to the slain animal.

Yeah, I'm conflicted on this point, too. There are many cultures that use parts of animals that we would just throw away. I'm happy that they do it, but I'm not about to. That said, I really don't eat much meat anyway and I'm not going to eat offal on the odd time I do.

There's stuff not good enough for hotdogs? Shocking!

I say use Scrapple for pet food. Although I'm pretty sure that the food I feed my cat is quite high quality.

This post makes me think of our attitudes/lack of knowledge towards food. Have you seen Food Inc? It's pretty good! I showed it to a class of mine, and they wrote truly amazing reflections about it!

Oh! Getting a new layout is super easy!

When you are on the dashboard part of blogger click on "design", then go to "template designer" and play around. It's really easy! You used to have to cut and past HTML code to get a nice blog. Not anymore!

WIGSF - I figured that some people would take this stance, which is why I put it in my blog. Theres nothing wrong with utilizing every part of the animal, and think better of the butchers for doing so. BUT with that being said - would you eat this?

Berly - I havent eaten pork since 1991....so im with you on it, just in a different way.

Bleph - GOOD point. If youre actually going to EAT meat, then you should go for the good stuff when you do.

Christielli - I havent actually seen that, but its on my list. And thanks for the recommendation about how to change the background!!!

That looks horrifying, just horrible. I had a friend who's parents cooked spam as a kid. I didn't know what it was!
